PGA Tour to move WGC event from Akron to Memphis

The annual World Golf Championship event in Akron, Ohio is on the move, as the PGA Tour announced Thursday the tournament will move to Memphis from 2019.

The move to TPC Southwind means the annual FedEx St. Jude Classic will become the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational, ensuring the continuation of an event that has been on the calendar since 1958. The final version of the original tournament will be played June 7-10 on this year's calendar.

"We are thrilled FedEx has signed on as the title sponsor of this World Golf Championships event," PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement. "The PGA Tour has had a front-row seat to witnessing the impact the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has made on countless lives."

There was no formal announcement of the relocated tournament's expected dates, but the Akron event is traditionally played in the month of August.

The PGA Tour Champions will replace the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club with the Senior Players Championship, bringing one of the five majors on the 50-plus circuit to the historic venue.
