DeChambeau 'couldn't unleash the Kraken' in Round 1 at Harbour Town
Bryson DeChambeau sits just three strokes off the lead after shooting a bogey-free 67 at the RBC Heritage Classic on Thursday, despite using his biggest weapon sparingly.
"Around the golf course, I couldn't unleash the Kraken today. There's no way I could unleash it," DeChambeau said after barely using his driver during the opening round, according to ASAP Sports. "It was just too tight out there. The wind was swirling all day, and I couldn't feel comfortable to give it a good whack, but I was still able to manage keeping it mostly in the fairway."
DeChambeau hit his driver just five times all day at Harbour Town Golf Links, which rewards accuracy over distance off the tee. As the 26-year-old noted, wind conditions were creating additional difficulty by the time he teed off at 12:43 p.m. ET.
"It's scary at some points in time for me because I'm like, 'how do I fit it in there,' rather than just trying to give it my full blow that I'm comfortable with," he said. "But that's a part of the game. We don't play the same course every week, and you've got to adapt."
DeChambeau is currently playing at 240 pounds after adding 25 pounds of muscle during the hiatus in an effort to gain distance. He averaged 340 yards off the tee last week at the Charles Schwab Challenge - drawing rave reviews from Rory McIlroy in the process - but just 293 yards Thursday.
