Tiger, Rory plummet down Northern Trust leaderboard on moving day
Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy found themselves heading in the wrong direction on moving day.
The highly anticipated pairing disappointed at TPC Boston on Saturday, as Woods carded a 73 while McIlroy finished with a 74. They ranked 68th and 69th, respectively, among the 70 players who made the cut when their rounds concluded.
Tiger's game was the polar opposite of his standard play. Known to be wild with the driver in recent years, he hit 12 of 14 fairways Saturday. But one of the best iron players of all time hit just 11 of 18 greens in regulation with an average proximity to the hole of nearly 45 feet, according to Golf Channel's Tiger Tracker. His putting was also miserable, as his longest make of the day was a 7-footer for birdie on No. 9.
Woods even putted with the flagstick in toward the end of his round, for what he claimed was the "first time ever."
Rory wasn't as consistently bad as Tiger, but he had two blowup holes that cost him dearly. He carded a triple-bogey on the par-5 second - thanks to this embarrassing duff - and another triple four holes later on the par-4 seventh.
The two superstars may not have had the days they envisioned, but at least they found solace in each other's company.
