Matthew Wolff withdraws from The Open
Matthew Wolff has decided he will not partake in the upcoming Open Championship at Royal St. George's in Sandwich, England, from July 15-18, the tournament announced, per NBC's Will Gray.
The 22-year-old did not provide a reason for his withdrawal. This marks the second major of the season he will not participate in, as he also opted out from the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island in May.
Wolff played in three straight tournaments leading up to last weekend following a two-month mental-health-related absence. He finished T15 at the U.S. Open, missed the cut at the Travelers Championship, and was T58 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
The Oklahoma State product is now the fourth top-50 player in the world to withdraw from the tournament, joining Sungjae Im and Si Woo Kim (Olympics), and Kevin Na (travel restrictions). K.H. Lee (birth of his child) and Danny Lee (injury) have also withdrawn.
Andy Sullivan, Antoine Rozner, and Troy Merritt are the replacements for the three most recent withdrawals.
The Open, which was canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is being played under strict protocols for players.
