The course

Southern Hills has hosted numerous majors before, but the Oklahoma layout will appear very different this time around than the tree-lined course we've grown accustomed to. A full restoration in 2018 has changed the look of the 18 holes, with many trees removed to open up views and angles previously unseen.
For the PGA Championship, Southern Hills will be stretched to 7,556 yards and play to a par of 70, with the only two par-5s measuring over 600 yards. This year's layout is more than 400 total yards longer than the 2007 event, one that was played in August before the PGA Championship permanently moved to May a few years ago.

Mickelson withdraws from PGA Championship, won't defend title

After initially committing to the field, Phil Mickelson stunned the golfing world by deciding to withdraw and not defend his title at Southern Hills. Most assumed Mickelson's self-imposed exile since February would end in Oklahoma as he's the defending champion at the event, but the 51-year-old opted against that late on Friday afternoon. All eyes are now on the first LIV golf event in London in June to see if Mickelson resurfaces on the rival tour. See full article.
5 storylines for Southern Hills

Mickelson's decision to withdraw shifts the focus to Tiger Woods ahead of the week in Tulsa. Woods' first event since the Masters comes at a Southern Hills course that hosted his 13th major win, the PGA Championship title in 2007. Woods' return to action and Scottie Scheffler's attempt to win a second straight major top our storylines to watch this week. See full article.
