The regular season is over, the playoffs are finally here, and the PGA TOUR is embarking on a new format for this year's final push to the FedEx Cup.

In a drastic change, only 70 players will make the playoffs in the opening event, compared to 125 in previous iterations. That will be followed by a cut to 50 players for the BMW Championship before the traditional 30 are left for the TOUR Championship at East Lake.

Here's all you need to know for this year's FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Schedule

When: Aug. 10-13
Where: TPC Southwind, Memphis
Field: Top 70 in FedEx Cup
Defending champion: Will Zalatoris

The annual stop in Memphis once again doubles as the playoff opener. Last year's event provided an incredibly dramatic finish with Will Zalatoris beating Sepp Straka in a playoff for his first career PGA TOUR victory. Zalatoris won't be in the field this time around as he continues his recovery from back surgery.

When: Aug. 17-20
Where: Olympia Fields North Course, Olympia Fields, Illinois
Field: Top 50 in FedEx Cup
Defending champion: Patrick Cantlay

The BMW Championship might as well be called the Patrick Cantlay Invitational at this point. The American standout won the 2021 event at Caves Valley before going back-to-back with a victory last year at Wilmington Country Club in Delaware. He'll aim for three in a row at a third different course with the tournament returning to Olympia Fields.

When: Aug. 24-27
Where: East Lake Golf Club, Atlanta
Field: Top 30 in FedEx Cup
Defending champion: Rory McIlroy

While the rest of the playoff format has changed, the TOUR Championship at East Lake remains the same. Once again, the top 30 players in the standings after the opening two playoff events will make the finale, and the staggered scoreboard will be in play.

FedEx Cup seed Starting score
No. 1 10-under
No. 2 8-under
No. 3 7-under
No. 4 6-under

Nos. 11-15 3-under
Nos. 16-20 2-under

Rory McIlroy once trailed by 10 strokes during last year's TOUR Championship and was down six entering the final round. However, that wouldn't deter the four-time major champion as he chased down Scottie Scheffler to become the first man to win three different FedEx Cups.
