2024 Sony Open preview at Waialae Country Club

The second half of the Hawaii swing sees the TOUR move from Maui to Honolulu for the annual Sony Open at the historic Waialae Country Club.

The first event of the 2024 season to host a full field will see 144 players tee it up, with Ludvig Aberg, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Sahith Theegala, Hideki Matsuyama, Justin Rose, Brian Harman, and last week's winner Chris Kirk headlining the tournament.

Last year's result

It was Si Woo Kim's weekend during last year's Sony Open, as the South Korean finished with two straight 64s to clip Hayden Buckley by a stroke. Kim began his Sunday three shots off the pace but used a torrid finish to grab the clubhouse lead ahead of the final group. The highlight for him was a brilliant chip-in birdie on the 71st hole of the event to put him in a tie for the lead. He followed that up with a two-putt birdie on the final hole, snagging the top spot with Buckley coming up the last. Kim claimed his fourth PGA TOUR victory after Buckley missed a birdie putt on No. 18.

Woodland's return

Gary Woodland returns to the TOUR for the first time since the Wyndham Championship last August. The former U.S. Open champion underwent surgery to remove a lesion from his brain in September and spoke candidly earlier in the week about the situation. Explosive finish

With the Waialae layout offering plenty of chances for drama down the stretch, an explosive finish is almost guaranteed at the Sony Open. Kim scored birdie-birdie to win last year's tournament by one stroke, with a clutch chip-in on the 17th being the turning point. However, 2022's event provided an even better moment when Matsuyama won thanks to an all-time eagle in the first playoff hole.

Kevin Na erased a three-shot deficit over the final six holes of the 2021 tourney, and Cam Smith rallied from two back with two holes remaining to claim the 2020 trophy.

Zalatoris looking for progress

Zalatoris' return from back surgery at December's Hero World Challenge marked a significant milestone after he was on the shelf since March. But it also highlighted he had a long way to go to regain the form that had him on the first page of the leaderboard in virtually every major championship he played. Zalatoris finished at the bottom in last month's 20-man field, posting two rounds at 79 or worse for the week. The Sony Open will mark Zalatoris' first full-field event in 10 months, and he'll be looking for more progress as he continues the road back.
