Farmers Insurance Open: Cali swing continues at Torrey Pines

The PGA TOUR season begins in Hawaii every year, but the annual trip to Torrey Pines at the end of January really gets the schedule moving.

The Farmers Insurance Open will once again be played at the iconic course just outside of San Diego, with both the North and South layouts used over the opening two rounds before the field is cut. And it'll again run on a unique Wednesday-to-Saturday schedule to avoid competing with the NFL conference championship games on Sunday.

Sure, the event lost some star power when Jon Rahm moved to LIV Golf and Justin Thomas and Nick Dunlap - last week's historic amateur winner - withdrew. But there's still a strong field for the classic Southern California tournament.

When: Jan. 24-27
Where: Torrey Pines Golf Course, La Jolla, California

Last year's result

Max Homa found the winner's circle for the sixth time on the PGA TOUR with a final-round 66 to top Keegan Bradley by two strokes. But even though Homa was the victor, the final day's top newsmaker might have been Sam Ryder - and his mother.

Searching for his first career PGA TOUR win, Ryder entered the final round with the 54-hole lead. His mother was interviewed as he played the 14th hole with a one-stroke edge over Homa. The interview was highly engaging television: Ryder's mom playfully told CBS Sports' Amanda Renner that she was very excited to be there to see his first win. Unfortunately, Ryder promptly double-bogeyed the 15th hole to drop two strokes while, at the same time, Homa birdied the 16th to pull away. Ryder eventually finished fourth after a final-round 75, which provided incredible theatre down the stretch that will be tough to replicate this year.

Reasons to watch

Homa defends

Homa has six PGA TOUR wins - four of which came in his home state of California - and likes to double up victories at friendly courses. He's won twice in Napa at the Fortinet and twice at Quail Hollow in the Wells Fargo. After last year's win at Torrey Pines, Homa now has his first opportunity to double up in San Diego. The 33-year-old comes to the event with just one start in 2024 - a 14th-place showing at the Sentry just after New Year's.

Last chance for Pebble

This week's event in San Diego also represents the final chance on the Aon Swing 5 to qualify for the second signature event of the season. The top five earners in aggregate points in the four-tourney run of The Sentry, the Sony Open, the American Express and the Farmers Insurance Open will lock up a spot in the exclusive 80-man field at Pebble Beach. Grayson Murray and Christiaan Bezuidenhout are already set to play, but the final three places will be determined at Torrey Pines.

Looking for the long shot

It's been the year of the long shot on the PGA TOUR, with each of the three champions coming from longer than 100-1 odds to win. Chris Kirk got things going with a 125-1 victory at the Sentry before Murray overcame 300-1 odds to claim the Sony title. Dunlap's shocking win took the long-shot storyline to a new extreme, though, coming at whopping 400-1 odds. But Torrey Pines has been dominated by big names in recent years, and Luke List's 2022 victory at 90-1 is the only win with odds longer than 60-1 since 2014.
