Tommy Fleetwood, Viktor Hovland, Brian Harman, Austin Smotherman, and Michael Thorbjornsen are T-10th at 5-under.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler narrowly made the cut by two strokes. After bogeying the par-5 16th, he closed out his round with a birdie on the par-4 18th to survive into the weekend. Scheffler has now made 70 consecutive cuts, which is 49 more than the next longest active streak. He previously won The Players in 2023 and 2024.
Justin Thomas, who played in Scheffler's group, said he isn't concerned about the star's play.
"He's still hitting shots that not many people on planet Earth can hit in the same rounds," Thomas said, according to The Associated Press. "It's just golf. He's been hitting it pretty much where he wants within like a blanket size for what seems like two or three years. He's still had a pretty damned good year."
Rory McIlroy, the defending tournament champion, carded a 1-under 71 and is T-51st at 1-over through 36 holes.
