Garrick Higgo may not be the biggest name on the PGA Championship leaderboard, but the World No. 85 did supply arguably the most memorable moment from the opening day at Aronimink.
The South African, who has never placed inside the top 40 at a major championship, fired a 1-under 69 to finish his round two back of the clubhouse lead. However, he would've been tied for the lead were it not for a two-stroke penalty he incurred after arriving late for his tee time.
Higgo was scheduled to go off in the 7:18 a.m. ET group but found himself racing to the tee from the putting green. While his caddie was already on the tee, Higgo showed up late and hit with the two-shot penalty.
"The rule is that if you're one second late, you're late. I was obviously there on time but late, and that's a two-shot penalty," Higgo told Marty Smith of ESPN.
He added, "Obviously it's unfortunate. I usually cut it fine. I was cold this morning, I was trying to stay as warm as possible coming from the range."
Higgo ended up with a double-bogey 6 on the first hole as a result of the penalty. It was one of the lone blemishes on an otherwise clean card.
Higgo admitted afterward that he didn't realize he was tardy until the last moment on his walk to the first tee.
"I wouldn't have been late if I knew I was running late." Higgo said.
"(The penalty) wasn't a surprise," he added. "I was late. I mean, my caddie was yelling at me to get to the tee."
Higgo should have plenty of time to arrive without issue Friday, as he's off in the 12:43 p.m. ET group.
