U.S. captain Hilary Knight, in her fifth and final Olympics, scored the equalizer with 2:04 left in regulation off a deflection to send the game to OT. It was the 15th goal of her Olympic career, putting her ahead of Natalie Darwitz and Katie King Crowley for the most goals scored at the Games by an American in women's hockey.

Keller and Laila Edwards assisted on Knight's goal, while Taylor Heise picked up the helper on the OT winner. Aerin Frankel stood tall in the American crease, turning aside 30 of 31 shots.

Kristin O'Neill opened the scoring for Canada, going backhand off a feed from Laura Stacey while shorthanded 54 seconds into the second period. Desbiens stopped 31 of 33 shots in the Canadian net.

The American women's national team has now won eight straight games against Canada, matching the longest streak in the rivalry. Team USA dismantled Canada 5-0 in the round robin.

It's the third Olympic gold medal for the United States since women's hockey was added in 1998. The U.S. previously won in Nagano in 1998 and in PyeongChang in 2018. Canada has won the sport's other five Olympic gold medals.
