Wilson targeting 'efficient football' in preseason finale

Russell Wilson plans to play the Pittsburgh Steelers' preseason finale against the Detroit Lions on Saturday in hopes of getting the offense back on track.

The veteran quarterback struggled to move the football in his Steelers debut last Saturday - a 9-3 preseason loss to the Buffalo Bills.

"I'm excited to get back on the field," Wilson said Wednesday, according to ESPN's Brooke Pryor. "Last week was great to be out there for the first time, putting more pads on and everything else. And obviously, we didn't get the win and everything else, but I think the big thing for us is just executing and us making our plays and doing our thing."

Wilson averaged just 4.7 yards per attempt as he completed 8 of 10 passes for 47 yards. He also took three sacks and failed to lead any scoring drives.

"The most important thing for us to accomplish is to play efficient football, move the ball, and (get) down the field," Wilson said. "Obviously, we want to celebrate in the end zone. That would be fun. We need to make sure that happens, and that's the standard of football we want to be able to play in."

Wilson added that he didn't have any lingering concerns about the calf injury that limited him during training camp.

The Steelers' only points against the Bills came on a drive orchestrated by quarterback Justin Fields.

Pittsburgh also lost its first preseason game to the Houston Texans by a score of 20-12.

Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith recently cautioned against panicking, saying "preseason could distort reality."
