The Vancouver Canucks signed defenseman Marcus Pettersson to a six-year contract extension that carries a $5.5-million cap hit, the team announced Wednesday.

The contract has a full no-move clause for the first three years and a 15-team no-trade clause for the last three, Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli reports.

Vancouver acquired Pettersson and forward Drew O'Connor from the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night in exchange for forward Danton Heinen, defenseman Vincent Desharnais, prospect Melvin Fernstrom, and the New York Rangers' 2025 first-round pick.

Pettersson has played over 23 minutes in both games with the Canucks so far. The 28-year-old has three goals and 18 points in 49 contests this season and has averaged 22:09.

"In just a couple of games, Marcus has already shown us the type of leadership, poise, and character that we want in a top-four defenseman," Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin said in a statement. "He has a calming influence on the ice, uses his long reach and hockey smarts to break up plays, and has a good first pass to help us create more offensively. We are extremely happy to get this deal done and look forward to working with him in both the short term and long term."

The Swede was set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. Pettersson costs just over $4 million against the cap on his current contract.

Vancouver is tied with the Calgary Flames for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference.
