The Pittsburgh Penguins announced Wednesday they hired Dan Muse as the 23rd head coach in franchise history.

Muse worked as an assistant coach for the New York Rangers under Peter Laviolette the past two campaigns. He was also an assistant under Laviolette with the Nashville Predators for three seasons from 2017-2020.

Additionally, Muse served as head coach of the USHL's Chicago Steel from 2015-17 and the U.S. National Team Development Program from 2020-23.

Muse replaces Mike Sullivan, who, coincidentally, replaced Laviolette as head coach of the Rangers this offseason following a 10-year run in Pittsburgh.

"What separated Dan was his ability to develop players, win at all levels where he has been a head coach, and his consistent success coaching special teams in the NHL," Penguins president of hockey operations and general manager Kyle Dubas said.

"From his success in developing college and junior players, to his impactful work with veteran players during his time in the NHL, Dan has shown a proven ability to connect with players at all stages of their careers and help them to reach their potential."

Muse was in charge of running the penalty kill during his time as an assistant in Nashville and New York. The Predators ranked 13th in the league on the penalty kill in his three seasons. The Rangers ranked fourth shorthanded under Muse the last two campaigns.

The Predators (2018) and Rangers (2024) both won a Presidents' Trophy with Muse as an assistant.

As a head coach, Muse won a gold medal for the USA at the 2023 Under-18s and a 2017 championship with the Steel.

The 42-year-old hails from Canton, Massachusetts.
