Mets' Senga lands on IL with strained hamstring

The New York Mets placed ace Kodai Senga on the 15-day injured list after he strained his hamstring during Thursday's game against the Washington Nationals.

"He's gonna get an MRI tomorrow. We'll see the severity of it," manager Carlos Mendoza said postgame, according to SNY. "But he's gonna be on (the) IL here. So we just gotta wait and see what we're dealing with."

Senga sustained the injury while covering first base in the sixth inning. He had to leap to catch first baseman Pete Alonso's high throw and immediately grabbed at his hamstring after landing on the base awkwardly. He stayed down for a while but eventually left with a trainer under his own power.

"I still feel awful," Alonso said about his involvement in the play, according to SNY. "For me, I'm just trying to make a baseball play, just trying to make a play for my pitcher. I tried to make the best throw I could. ... It just sucks to be involved in that."

Senga didn't allow a run on just one hit with one walk and five strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings before departing.

The 2023 All-Star strained his calf last July, which forced him to miss the rest of the regular season.

Senga has been one of the best pitchers in baseball for the NL East-leading Mets in 2025. The 32-year-old owns a 1.47 ERA with a 1.11 WHIP and 70 strikeouts over 73 2/3 innings (13 starts).

The Mets recalled reliever Max Kranick from Triple-A to take Senga's spot on the active roster.

The Mets went on to defeat the Nationals 4-3, completing a three-game sweep for their sixth straight win.
