Jets GM: Fields could develop like Darnold, Mayfield

New York Jets general manager Darren Mougey is convinced Justin Fields has what it takes to be the next Baker Mayfield or Sam Darnold in due time.

Darnold and Mayfield were both coveted draft picks in 2018, with the latter going first overall and the former selected third overall. However, both quarterbacks cycled through multiple teams before finding their footing in the NFL.

"I do believe Justin can be one of those guys," Mougey said Thursday, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini. "I've seen progress during this camp and look forward to seeing the progress throughout the season as they all come together. ...

"Obviously, it's his third stop in three years with three different coordinators and a lot of moving parts, so it does take time. But I like where he's at."

Fields has bounced around the NFL since the Chicago Bears drafted him 11th overall in 2021. He spent three seasons in Chicago before being traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers ahead of the 2024 draft. Fields started the first six games of last season for Pittsburgh, going 4-2 before giving way to a healthy Russell Wilson.

The Jets signed Fields to a two-year, $40-million contract in free agency. He's compiled a 14-30 record with a 61.1% completion rate, 45 passing touchdowns, and 31 interceptions. He's also rushed for 2,509 yards and 19 scores over his career.
