Genoa signs Giovanni Simeone, son of Atletico Madrid manager
Genoa announced Thursday the club has signed forward Giovanni Simeone on a permanent deal out of River Plate, bringing on the Argentina under-20 international who is also the son of Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone.
Simeone, 21, most recently played with Argentina at Rio 2016. He featured off the bench in all three of the Albiceleste's Group D matches, but could not provide enough help to prevent Argentina from crashing out at the group stage.
He joined River Plate in 2013 out of the club's youth ranks and spent last season on loan with Banfield, where he made 29 appearances and scored 12 goals.
Simeone joins a Genoa side chalk-full of attacking options, and will need to compete alongside Lucas Ocampos, Serge Gakpe, Leonardo Pavoletti, Darko Lazovic, and Goran Pandev for a starting role.
