Italian FA facing FIFA discipline over Muntari treatment

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) could be the recipient of swift punishment from FIFA over its handling of the Sulley Muntari incident.

Muntari was the victim of racist chants during a match at Cagliari, and Pescara's Ghanaian midfielder was shown a yellow card for dissent by the match official before receiving a second caution for marching off the pitch.

The FIGC subsequently banned the former AC Milan standout for one match while failing to penalise Cagliari, and despite rescinding Muntari's ban, a clear message has been sent that will only oblige further instances of racism in football.

"We have a committee in charge of monitoring this and the committee will take action," FIFA general secretary Fatma Samoura told Richard Conway from BBC Sport. "What matters is that the committee has to act and the sooner the better.

"I have my personal feelings on anybody that is treated like he has been treated, on the pitch and off the pitch but I'm not here for my personal matters. I'm here to make sure that FIFA takes, through the committee, the appropriate action for any single discriminatory action."

Samoura's words come a day after Muntari publicly criticised both FIFA and UEFA for its lack of action, prompting remarks from FIFA chief Gianni Infantino.

"We will work together," Infantino said Tuesday. "Unfortunately idiots, there are always idiots everywhere but we have to fight them. We have to work on the people."

During this week's FIFA congress in Bahrain, Samoura added, "I don't have to call people anytime that they have been victim of an abuse.

"We've been regularly publicising the action of the committee on every action that relates to racism, homophobic chants and any kind of discrimination."

In September 2016, FIFA disbanded its anti-racism task force, stating that the group had "completely fulfilled its temporary mission."
