GENOA, Italy (AP) — Genoa and Sampdoria fans clashed violently on a city bridge and outside the stadium ahead of an Italian Cup derby Wednesday.
Police in riot gear were also targeted as fans threw fireworks, bottles and other objects at each other.
Sampdoria won the second-round match 6-5 in a shootout after the teams played out a 1-1 draw in normal time. They'll face Roma in the next round.
Since Genoa is in Serie A and Sampdoria is in Serie B, this was the only meeting this season between the two city clubs that share the Luigi Ferraris stadium.
