The permanent move is likely aimed at paving the way for Torres' eventual return to Atletico Madrid in a deal that is on the "verge of completion" and reportedly involves the reigning La Liga champions shipping Alessio Cerci to AC Milan in exchange.
Torres, who joined Milan from Chelsea on a two-year loan deal during the summer transfer window, has endured a disastrous stint in Serie A. He's only scored one goal in 10 appearances and hasn't featured for Milan since Nov. 23 after falling behind Jeremy Menez, who isn't even a natural striker, in the squad's pecking order.
Cerci, meanwhile, has been enduring struggles of his own. He joined Atleti over the summer and has played only 153 minutes in all competitions, scoring one goal. Although Milan's issues are largely at the back, he should provide the club with another solid option in front of goal and receive significantly more playing time.
