Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer has a broken right thumb, the club announced on Thursday, without saying how long the player would be out or when he suffered the injury.

"Yann Sommer underwent medical tests this morning at the Istituto Humanitas di Rozzano which revealed a fracture to his right thumb," the reigning Serie A champions said on their website. "The necessary therapy will be decided in the coming days."

Inter are second in the table two points behind Napoli.

Italian media reported that the 36-year-old Swiss goalkeeper would be unavailable for Saturday's match against Genoa and could miss the top-of-the-table clash with leaders Napoli on March 2.

Inter's backup keeper is Spaniard Josep Martinez, who arrived last summer from Genoa and has played one match, keeping a clean sheet as Inter beat Udinese 2-0 in the Italian Cup in December.
