Watch: Willem II's Kali becomes 1st player sent off using video
Congratulations are in order for Willem II midfielder Anouar Kali, who on Wednesday became the first player sent off courtesy new video referee technology.
Kali, who lined up for Willem during Wednesday's 5-0 drubbing to Ajax in the KNVB Cup, was initially shown a yellow card for a studs-up challenge on Lasse Schone.
Ten seconds later, after consulting pitch-side video review via headset, the match official deemed Kali's tackle to be of a violent nature, reversing the yellow card for the red variety.
The Dutch FA introduced the technology this season, where a match official with access to video notifies the referee of incidences such as penalties, red cards, offsides, and dubious goals. The technology has already been used in North America's third-tier and during a France-Italy friendly in Bari on Sept. 1.
