Mulkey ends illustrious reign at Baylor to take LSU job

Legendary head coach Kim Mulkey is leaving Baylor following a decorated 21-year run to take the top job at LSU.

Mulkey will take over in Baton Rouge from Nikki Fargas, who stepped down Saturday amid reports that she's set to be named team president of the WNBA's Las Vegas Aces.

Mulkey, 58, guided Baylor to three national championships, including the first in program history in 2005. She's one of three head coaches to win three-plus women's Division I titles, joining Connecticut's Geno Auriemma (11) and Tennessee's Pat Summitt (eight).

Mulkey also led the Bears to 11 Big 12 regular-season titles and 10 conference tournament wins. She's twice been named AP College Basketball Coach of the Year (2012, 2019)

The bench boss is the fastest to reach 600 wins in NCAA Division I men’s or women’s basketball history.

The move to LSU will be a homecoming of sorts for the Tickfaw, Louisiana-raised Mulkey, who was an All-American and two-time national champion as a player at Louisiana Tech.

She was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame as a player in 2020, and Mulkey was also part of the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame's 2020 class. That enshrinement was rescheduled for May 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
