Griner agrees to join Dream
Free-agent center Brittney Griner agreed to a contract with the Atlanta Dream, she announced in a video, per Khristina Williams of "In Case You Missed It."
The move cannot be made official until Feb. 1.
Griner spent the first 11 years of her WNBA career with the Phoenix Mercury and was an anchor for the defense. The nine-time All-Star won two Defensive Player of the Year awards, was named to seven All-Defensive teams, and led the WNBA in blocks eight times and in scoring twice.
The 34-year-old was drafted first overall in 2013 after four successful years at Baylor, where she became a two-time Player of the Year, Big 12 Rookie of the Year, and a four-time Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. She also led the Bears to an NCAA title in 2012.
Atlanta is looking to rebound from last season's 15-25 finish. The Dream fired head coach Tanisha Wright earlier this offseason, replacing her with ex-Florida Gulf Coast bench boss Karl Smesko.
The Mercury, meanwhile, reportedly acquired five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas from the Connecticut Sun earlier Tuesday. They're expected to meet with Dallas Wings star Satou Sabally after she requested a trade in early January, according to ESPN's Alexa Philippou.
Mercury legend Diana Taurasi is an unrestricted free agent and could decide to retire after 20 years with the organization. The pair helped Phoenix win its third WNBA title in 2014.
