Petr Nedved returns to the Olympics 20 years later with a new (old) country
At the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Petr Nedved, then 23 years old, won a silver medal as part of Canada's men's hockey team. Nedved had defected to Canada in 1989 from Czechoslovakia during a hockey tournament in Calgary and was granted Canadian citizenship.
Twenty years later, Nedved returns to the Olympics, only now he's back with his home country, the Czech Republic. Nedved was eligible for the change because he had played the last six seasons back in the Czech Republic for the Liberec White Tigers.
It's a bit of a strange situation but one Nedved is glad to be part of with his career coming to a close.
"I never thought after 20 years I'd go to the Olympics," Nedved said, via Sports Illustrated. "This is kind of a nice way to end my career. It was a great honor to play for Canada. I enjoyed every moment playing for Canada. It was awesome. But now I'm playing for my own country, where I came from. At my age, in the last year of my career, there's nothing better than that."
It's unclear how much Nedved will play for the Czechs during the Winter Games in Sochi, but if and when he does take the ice it will be a homecoming 20 years in the making.
