At long last, the 2026 World Cup kicks off this week. We made it. Ahead of Thursday's tournament opener, we're sizing up the field with tiered rankings of all 48 teams in the competition.

Heavyweight contenders

Barring a surprise, one of these teams will lift the trophy July 19.

1. France 🇫🇷

France has the tournament's best squad on paper, with Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, and Michael Olise leading the way. No one should be surprised if Didier Deschamps' men become the first team to play in three consecutive World Cup finals since Brazil (1994-2002). - Miari

2. Spain 🇪🇸

Spain is loaded with world-class talent and prides itself on controlling possession and dictating tempo - the perfect formula for North America's heat. The reigning European champion is primed for a deep run this year. - Johnstone

3. Argentina 🇦🇷

Argentina's core is basically the same from its 2022 World Cup title run, which raises aging concerns for key starters. But Lionel Messi and Co. deserve the benefit of the doubt; the reigning champion cruised past its South American rivals in qualifying. - Miari

4. England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Thomas Tuchel made waves with notable omissions from his final roster, but looking at the big picture, he ultimately selected players that fit his system. England has a clear identity and one of the best squads in the tournament. - Johnstone

5. Portugal 🇵🇹

Cristiano Ronaldo will make headlines by featuring in his sixth World Cup, but Portugal's midfield is its real strength. Vitinha, Joao Neves, and Bruno Fernandes form arguably the best central unit in the tournament and could guide Portugal to victory. - Johnstone

6. Brazil 🇧🇷

The talented Selecao are under immense pressure to end their World Cup drought. With Neymar's availability in question, Vinicius Junior, Raphinha, and other stars need to step up as Brazil seeks a true identity under Carlo Ancelotti. - Miari

7. Germany 🇩🇪

Germany has quality across the pitch, but lacks an elite striker. Nick Woltemade was his country's top scorer through qualifying, but he's being reimagined as a No. 8 at Newcastle United. The other contenders to lead the attack are Arsenal's Kai Havertz and Stuttgart's Deniz Undav. - Rouse

8. Netherlands 🇳🇱

The Netherlands has the potential to pull off a big upset in North America and win the title for the first time. Ronald Koeman's side has quality in every area of the pitch. Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk will anchor the Dutch, who offer plenty of pace in transition. - Johnstone

9. Norway 🇳🇴

The Norwegians head into their first World Cup since 1998 with a strong squad - and it's not just because of Erling Haaland. With Martin Odegaard, Alexander Sorloth, and others in the mix, Norway had Europe's most prolific attack during qualifying. - Miari

10. Croatia 🇭🇷

Croatia defies the odds on the biggest stage. Zlatko Dalic's side has proven it can thrive among the world's elite after reaching the 2018 final and finishing third in 2022. Croatia's midfield, led by Luka Modric, remains its focal point. - Johnstone

11. Colombia 🇨🇴

After missing the 2022 World Cup, Los Cafeteros have risen from the ashes. Colombia reached the Copa America final in 2024 before beating Brazil and Argentina in qualifying. Luis Diaz headlines a squad brimming with talent. - Johnstone

12. Belgium 🇧🇪

Belgium's aging stars have gas left in the tank. Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne, and Leandro Trossard scored in the Red Devils' impressive World Cup warmup wins over Croatia and Tunisia, while Thibaut Courtois kept two clean sheets. - Rouse

13. Senegal 🇸🇳

Senegal is worth watching. Sadio Mane, Kalidou Koulibaly, and other experienced campaigners are complemented by players in top form (such as Crystal Palace's Ismaila Sarr and Everton's Iliman Ndiaye) and a potential breakout star in 18-year-old attacker Ibrahim Mbaye. - Rouse

14. Morocco 🇲🇦

Morocco drew support from Africa and the entire Arab world as it reached the 2022 World Cup semifinals. It enters this tournament in good form and will expect to advance from a group with Brazil, Haiti, and Scotland. - Rouse

15. Ecuador 🇪🇨

Expectations are high for Ecuador, one of the most balanced and physical squads at the World Cup. Only Argentina collected more points than Ecuador during the qualification process in South America, and nobody had a better defensive record. - Miari

16. Japan 🇯🇵

Japan has long been known for its tactical discipline, but the Samurai Blue bring underrated individual talents to North America as well. Can they finally get over the hump and advance past the round of 16 for the first time? - Miari

17. Uruguay 🇺🇾

Uruguay was unimpressive in friendlies against Mexico, the United States, England, and Algeria during the international windows in November and March. It won't play another official match before its World Cup opener versus Saudi Arabia on June 15. - Rouse

18. Turkiye 🇹🇷

Coach Vincenzo Montella must get the best out of rising stars Kenan Yildiz and Arda Guler to emulate Turkiye's historic third-place finish at the 2002 World Cup. Despite qualifying via the playoffs, the team should benefit from a favorable group stage draw. - Johnstone

19. Ivory Coast 🇨🇮

Ivory Coast enters the tournament in impressive form, having suffered only two defeats in its last 14 games. Electric wingers Amad Diallo and Yan Diomande could propel the Ivorians to their first-ever appearance in the knockout stage. - Johnstone

20. Switzerland 🇨🇭

Switzerland reached the knockout stage in its last three World Cup appearances, and we should expect a similar result this year, with Murat Yakin's side going up against a favorable group. - Miari

21. Sweden 🇸🇪

Graham Potter became highly respected in Sweden for his achievements in club football at Ostersund. His reputation soared further when he guided the men's team to the World Cup. Sweden was a disaster under his predecessor, Jon Dahl Tomasson. - Rouse

22. United States 🇺🇸

Are Mauricio Pochettino's men starting to click at the right time? His team made amends for its woeful performances in March with encouraging displays in pre-World Cup friendlies. The USMNT beat Senegal and only narrowly lost to Germany in a game it largely dominated. - Rouse

23. Mexico 🇲🇽

Mexico hopes home support can inspire a deep World Cup run; maybe it could get past the round of 16 for the first time since hosting the 1986 tournament. Fulham striker Raul Jimenez will spearhead an aggressive and hard-working team. - Rouse

24. Austria 🇦🇹

Austria aims to reach the knockout rounds for the first time since 1954 - and this generation is running out of steam. Marko Arnautovic, who's now 37 and has completed 90 minutes just once in the past year, is still a starter. - Rouse

25. Canada 🇨🇦

Canada head coach Jesse Marsch has tried to stay positive despite many injuries upsetting the team's preparations. Most notably, Alphonso Davies will at least miss his country's opener, and standout defender Moise Bombito is expected to be sidelined for the entire tournament. - Rouse

26. Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Scotland makes its first World Cup appearance in 28 years and will lean on the experienced midfield duo of John McGinn and Scott McTominay. Andy Robertson's ability to deliver pinpoint crosses pairs well with McTominay's surging runs into the box from midfield. - Johnstone

27. South Korea 🇰🇷

South Korea icon Son Heung-min captains a side that breezed through qualification without a single loss. The Taeguk Warriors' core includes many players from their impressive campaign at the 2022 World Cup, where they reached the last 16. - Johnstone

28. Paraguay 🇵🇾

Paraguay prioritizes defending and fights hard for clean sheets. But, in Julio Enciso, the former Brighton & Hove Albion attacker who's now at Strasbourg, Paraguay possesses a talent who can create something out of nothing if he's fully fit. - Rouse

29. Ghana 🇬🇭

What is Ghana doing in 73rd place in FIFA's rankings? The Black Stars boast a strong attack. Carlos Queiroz, who's set for his fifth World Cup as a head coach, will try to bring some defensive solidity. - Rouse

30. Algeria 🇩🇿

Mohamed Amoura, the top scorer in African qualification with 10 goals, follows Wolfsburg's surprise relegation to Germany's second tier with his first World Cup campaign. He's joined by Amine Gouiri and Riyad Mahrez in attack. - Rouse

31. Egypt 🇪🇬

Egypt soaks up pressure before quickly releasing the ball to an attack of Omar Marmoush, Mohamed Salah, and Trezeguet. Salah will be desperate to impress on the world's biggest stage after a miserable final season with Liverpool. - Rouse

32. Czechia 🇨🇿

Czechia's physicality and hard-working ethos makes it a tough matchup for most sides. Patrik Schick finished the season in great form with Bayer Leverkusen, and rising Lyon star Pavel Sulc provides flair that Czechia previously lacked. - Johnstone

33. Iran 🇮🇷

Iran's conflict with the United States and Israel put its team's World Cup participation in doubt, but the men's side will compete. Sardar Azmoun, a divisive figure who's also one of Iran's greatest players ever, isn't in the squad. - Rouse

34. Australia 🇦🇺

Mohamed Toure has been exceptional for Norwich City, cramming in 10 goals and three assists since his midseason move from Denmark's Randers. Australia needs the striker firing in order to emerge from a group with Turkey, the United States, and Paraguay. - Rouse

35. Bosnia and Herzegovina 🇧🇦

There's a gap of 21-and-a-half years between the players who could shine most for Bosnia. Eighteen-year-old winger Kerim Alajbegovic was born a day before Edin Dzeko, who's now 40, scored his first goal for Felix Magath's Wolfsburg in 2007. - Rouse

36. DR Congo 🇨🇩

The team's preparations have been rocked by cancelations, travel restrictions, and logistical hurdles due to the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This year's tournament marks the country's first World Cup appearance since it competed as Zaire in 1974. - Rouse

37. Panama 🇵🇦

Panama's group games get harder and harder. It takes on Ghana, which has star power in Antoine Semenyo and Inaki Williams, before matches against Croatia and England. Panama lost 6-1 to England in its last World Cup appearance in 2018. - Rouse

38. Tunisia 🇹🇳

Tunisia scored just one goal in its friendlies versus Haiti, Canada, Austria, and Belgium in the lead-up to the tournament, and its limp attack was compounded by a 5-0 battering in the most recent fixture. It's not ideal preparation. - Rouse

39. Uzbekistan 🇺🇿

Abdukodir Khusanov finished behind only Nico O'Reilly in the fan voting for Manchester City's Player of the Season. Aside from Khusanov, only two other players - Istanbul Basaksehir's Eldor Shomurodov and Abbosbek Fayzullaev - compete outside of Uzbekistan, Iran, or the United Arab Emirates. - Rouse

40. New Zealand 🇳🇿

Chris Wood captains a side that bagged a remarkable 29 goals in five qualifying matches. But New Zealand faces much stiffer competition in a group with Belgium, Egypt, and Iran. - Johnstone

41. Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦

Saudi Arabia beat eventual champion Argentina in the 2022 World Cup group stage. Could it achieve a similar feat against Luis de la Fuente's much-fancied Spain side? - Rouse

42. South Africa 🇿🇦

South Africa's squad predominantly hails from its domestic league. Twenty-one-year-old attacker Relebohile Mofokeng and others can put themselves in the shop window with eye-catching performances at the World Cup. - Rouse

43. Iraq 🇮🇶

Iraq has never registered a victory at the World Cup, having dropped three games in its only prior participation in 1986. That drought likely won't be snapped now, as the Lions of Mesopotamia face a tough group that features France, Senegal, and Norway. - Miari

44. Jordan 🇯🇴

Jordan is preparing for its first World Cup. Captain Musa Al-Taamari is the only squad member who plays for a European club. The winger scored six goals and provided six assists for Rennes in the 2025-26 Ligue 1 season. - Rouse

45. Haiti 🇭🇹

Ex-France youth international Wilson Isidor became the most recognizable player in Haiti's squad when he switched allegiances in March. But the country's all-time top scorer, journeyman striker Duckens Nazon, remains a true national icon. - Rouse

46. Cape Verde 🇨🇻

Cape Verde could upset the odds and get a result against Saudi Arabia in its first World Cup. Sadly, it will probably be out of the tournament at that stage after playing Spain and Uruguay in Group H. - Rouse

47. Qatar 🇶🇦

Qatar boss Julen Lopetegui will finally work at a World Cup. He qualified for the 2018 edition with Spain, but the federation dismissed him two days before its opening match due to Lopetegui negotiating a deal to become Real Madrid's head coach. - Rouse

48. Curacao 🇨🇼

It's remarkable that Curacao - the smallest nation by population to reach a World Cup at under 160,000 - qualified for this tournament. It will be a miracle if it can get anything from its group matches against Germany, Ecuador, and Ivory Coast. - Rouse
