ATP, WTA extend suspension of tours until June 7
The ATP and WTA released a joint statement Wednesday confirming the suspension of the respective tours is extended until June 7 amid coronavirus fears.
"After careful consideration, and due to the continuing outbreak of COVID-19, all ATP and WTA tournaments in the Spring clay-court swing will not be held as scheduled," the statement read.
The ATP initially declared a six-week hiatus last Thursday following the cancelation of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California.
"We are assessing all options related to preserving and maximising the tennis calendar based on various return dates for the Tours, which remains an unknown at this time," the statement added. "We are committed to working through these matters with our player and tournament members, and the other governing bodies, in the weeks and months ahead."
Combined ATP/WTA tournaments in Madrid and Rome have also been wiped from the schedule, as have WTA events in Strasbourg and Rabat, and ATP contests in Munich, Geneva, Estoril, and Lyon. The decision also affects the ATP Challenger Tour and ITF World Tennis Tour.
The French Tennis Federation previously announced that the next Grand Slam on the calendar, the French Open, had been moved from mid-May to September.
