Mariners' Gordon cuts interview short to take call from Griffey Jr.
Dee Gordon will transition to a new position in center field after being traded to the Seattle Mariners on Thursday, but at least he'll get some valuable advice from a Hall of Famer to help with the move.
The 29-year-old lives around the corner from longtime Mariners center fielder Ken Griffey Jr. in Florida and works out with Griffey's son, Trey.
Gordon appears to be close with Griffey Jr., as he ended an on-air interview with Danny, Dave & Moore on 710 ESPN Seattle on Thursday to take a call from his neighbor.
"I already know Mr. Griffey. He lives around the corner from me," Gordon said on the show. "I actually work out with Trey, and see Trey of ... and that's Mr. Griffey calling me right now."
Gordon has limited experience in the outfield - getting some reps during winter ball in 2013. He's spent his entire career as a shortstop or second baseman and has never played a big-league inning in the outfield.
"It is what it is and at the end of the day it's about winning ballgames," Gordon told the radio show when asked about moving from second to center. "I believe in my athleticism and my abilities so I'm going to go out there and be the best center fielder I can be."
Griffey Jr. would be a good teacher. During his 22-year career, Griffey Jr. won 10 consecutive Gold Gloves from 1990-1999.
