Wade Davis returning to Royals on minors deal

The Kansas City Royals signed veteran reliever Wade Davis to a minor-league contract, the team announced Wednesday.

Davis will make $1.25 million if he makes the major-league roster with performance bonuses, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports. The right-hander reportedly has an opt-out if he doesn't make the team by Opening Day.

The 35-year-old enjoyed the best baseball of his career while pitching for the Royals from 2014-2016, finishing eighth in AL Cy Young voting in 2014 and sixth in 2015. He was also a key member of the World Series-winning club in 2015.

The Rockies designated Davis for assignment in September 2020 after he signed a three-year, $52-million contract with Colorado during free agency in December 2017.
