Blue Jays' Manoah returning from minors, will start Friday
The Toronto Blue Jays will start right-hander Alek Manoah on Friday against the Detroit Tigers, manager John Schneider announced Tuesday, according to Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.
Manoah, who finished as an AL Cy Young finalist in 2022, was demoted to the Florida Complex League in early June after posting a 6.36 ERA and 6.52 FIP over 13 major-league starts this season.
The 25-year-old allowed a stunning 11 earned runs in his first rookie-ball start on June 27. However, he rebounded with a 10-strikeout performance while allowing just one earned run over five innings Sunday in Double-A.
"He's chomping at the bit to be back around the guys and, you know, back out competing at the highest level. So, he was appreciative (of the news)," Schneider said, according to Hazel Mae of Sportsnet.
Manoah authored a 2.24 ERA with 0.99 WHIP and 180 strikeouts over 196 2/3 innings (31 starts) en route to becoming an All-Star for the first time last season.
Blue Jays ace Kevin Gausman will start on extra rest Saturday thanks to Manoah's return.
