The Detroit Tigers placed shortstop Javier Báez on the 60-day injured list, the team announced Friday.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Báez will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right hip next week and miss the remainder of the season, according to Chris McCosky of the Detroit News.

"To get the best player out of him, we need him healthy. It's no doubt that it's been a really tough stretch for him in his career and a really tough stretch as a Tiger, but it doesn't mean that it can't change," Hinch said, according to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press.

Báez had another down year in 2024, hitting .184/.221/.294 with six home runs and 37 RBIs in 80 games. The 31-year-old's .516 OPS (44 OPS+) is the lowest of his career, while his minus-4 defensive runs saved ties his worst mark in 11 big-league seasons.

Báez earned $25 million this campaign and has $73 million remaining on his contract following this season.

In addition to Báez, the Tigers selected the contract of right-hander Ty Madden and recalled right-hander Mason Englert from Triple-A Toledo. Detroit also optioned left-hander Bryan Sammons and placed right-hander Will Vest on the paternity list.
