Red Sox lefty Paxton plans to retire after season

Boston Red Sox left-hander James Paxton is planning to retire at the end of the season.

"I think after this season, (I'm) going to be retiring and moving on to the next chapter," Paxton told Rob Bradford on the "Baseball Isn't Boring" podcast.

Paxton is currently on the 60-day injured list with a right calf strain he sustained in a start on Aug. 11 against the Houston Astros.

"It's tough. Obviously, I think that I can still do it," Paxton added. "I can still go out there and compete and help a team win. But I just think with where my family's at and what they need right now, they need me home, and I feel a duty and a responsibility to be at home with my family."

Paxton, 35, owns a 73-41 record with a 3.77 ERA across 11 MLB seasons. He's also made stops with the Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, and Los Angeles Dodgers.

His best moment came in 2018 when he threw a no-hitter as a member of the Mariners in his home country of Canada against the Toronto Blue Jays.
