New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole won't pitch in Game 4 of the World Series on Tuesday and didn't ask his manager to give him the start instead of Luis Gil.

Yankees skipper Aaron Boone said Cole didn't lobby to start the do-or-die home game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, nor were there any conversations about him making the start on short rest, according to The Athletic's Chris Kirschner.

Boone explained that he didn't consider starting Cole because of the ace's unusual season, Kirschner added. The 34-year-old began the year with an injured elbow and didn't make his regular-season debut until June.

Cole won't be available out of the bullpen for Game 4 either, Boone said, according to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch.

Cole was removed from Game 1 after 88 pitches. He allowed one run on four hits and exited with the lead, but the Yankees went on to lose 6-3 in extra innings.
