The Marlins will reportedly bring back a familiar face to compete for a rotation spot this spring, as the club re-signed veteran right-hander Kevin Slowey to a minor-league deal on Wednesday, according to Baseball America's Matt Eddy.
Though he's battled injury problems in recent years -- he missed more than two months with a forearm strain last season after spending nearly the entire 2012 campaign dealing with a stress fracture in his ribcage -- Slowey managed a 4.11 ERA with a 1.39 WHIP across 14 starts and six relief appearances with the Marlins in 2013.
Slowey, who turns 30 in May, represents one of scant few pitchers currently on Miami's roster with considerable big-league experience. The former second-round pick owns a career 4.58 ERA/4.18 FIP across 104 starts and 16 relief appearances over parts of six seasons in the major leagues.
