Mavs' Kidd: Refs clearly missed goaltending call on Pels' Murphy
Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd believes the referees missed a goaltending call when Trey Murphy blocked Spencer Dinwiddie's go-ahead layup attempt in the dying seconds of Wednesday's 119-116 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans.
"The league wants to get it right," Kidd told reporters postgame, according to ESPN. "The referees have a tough job. They clearly did not get that right, and it cost us maybe the game."
Video replays appeared to show that the ball made contact with the glass before Murphy got a hand on it. The Mavs were out of timeouts and could not challenge the call.
Dallas has formally ruled out filing an official protest with the NBA, according to league insider Marc Stein.
Dinwiddie says he purposely put the ball off the backboard to avoid a blocked shot.
"If people follow my career, and I beat the big or whatever, and I hold it out here, I put it directly on the glass for two reasons," Dinwiddie said. "One, I'm tall and long. I'm extending, so they have to jump over and block it.
"If you do happen to block it, it's already on the glass and I'm scoring. I've literally made a whole bunch of money doing that exact move."
Murphy was subsequently fouled and converted both free-throw attempts to put the Pelicans up three points.
Mavs forward Naji Marshall had a chance to tie the game, but his desperation heave from beyond half court fell short.
Dallas has now dropped three consecutive games and eight of its past 10. The Mavericks sit seventh in the West with a 22-19 record, and the Pelicans remain last at 10-32.
