Hawks sign Jason Richardson
The Atlanta Hawks have signed 13-year veteran Jason Richardson, the team announced Tuesday.
It was reported earlier that Richardson had agreed to a non-guaranteed deal, meaning he may be competing for a roster spot come training camp.
While it may seem strange for a 34-year-old with a strong track record to have to compete for a spot, Richardson has played sparingly due to injuries over the past three seasons. The Hawks also have 13 players under guaranteed contract and three more with non-guaranteed deals, although two of those may just be training camp invites.
Should Richardson make the team, he'll offer a wealth of experience, leadership, and - the Hawks are surely hoping - an additional threat from outside. The affable Richardson has knocked down 37 percent of his 3-point attempts for his career, which, combined with his two Slam Dunk Contest titles, makes him one of the premier NBA Jam players of the modern era.
In 857 games with five teams, Richardson has averaged 17.1 points, five rebounds, and 2.7 assists, but those numbers have dropped to 10.8, 3.7, and 1.8, respectively, since the start of the 2011-12 season.
The Philadelphia 76ers acquired Richardson from the Orlando Magic in a massive four-team trade in 2012, taking on the three years and $18.6 million remaining on his four-year deal. Richardson played 33 games that season and ultimately missed more than two calendar years before returning in February.
His time in Philadelphia didn't go how either side hoped, but Richardson played the good soldier in a bad situation and took to Instagram to thank the organization and fanbase on Tuesday:
CAPTION: I'd like to thank the 76ers organization and fans for a great 3 years. These last 3 years have been the toughest of my career and I was blessed to have an organization and and a fan base that supported me on and off the court! #PhillyStrong #TogetherWeBuild
