Report: Mack Brown finalizing return to North Carolina
Mack Brown will be the next head coach at North Carolina, which he led from 1988-97, a source confirmed to Jonathan M. Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer.
Several outlets reported Monday morning that the Tar Heels are getting ready to announce the move, though a source told Stadium Network's Brett McMurphy that the deal is "not done yet."
Brown enjoyed great success at UNC in the mid-1990s before moving to Texas, where he cemented his status as a college football legend. He amassed a 158-48 record over 16 seasons with the Longhorns and captured a national championship in 2005 by taking down USC at the Rose Bowl in one of the most famous games ever played.
Brown left Texas in 2013, and he spent the last several seasons working as an analyst for ESPN. The 67-year-old will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in December.
The Tar Heels are coming off a 2-9 season under former coach Larry Fedora, who was dismissed Sunday. The team has won just five of its last 18 games overall.
