West Virginia president: CFP expansion 'on life support'

West Virginia president Gordon Gee thinks the College Football Playoff expansion proposal may be falling apart.

Gee, who holds a spot on the CFP board of managers, told The Daily Athenaeum that he will not vote for the 12-team model. He pointed to the growing unpredictability in college football as a major concern for the proposal's survivability.

"I think (expansion) is on life support now," Gee said, according to ESPN's Andrea Adelson. "I have one of the votes and I think it nearly needs to be unanimous and I'm not voting for it. I think the Big Ten will not vote for it and the Pac-12 will probably not vote for it either."

"It's one of those ideas that I think was very good when there was stability," he added. "When there's instability, the idea becomes less appropriate."

West Virginia plays in the Big 12 conference, which was dealt a major blow when Oklahoma and Texas announced plans to depart for the SEC once the schools' media rights grants expire in 2025. Meanwhile, the conference was also left out of an alliance among the Big Ten, Pac-12, and ACC.

Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff and Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren both said they supported expanding the CFP earlier this week. However, both parties desired more clarity on the format.

The board of managers is slated to discuss the 12-team CFP proposal on Sept. 28.
