Texas running back CJ Baxter sustained a season-ending knee injury in practice Tuesday and will require surgery, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel.

Baxter injured his LCL and PCL in his right knee, Thamel adds.

The sophomore running back was set to be a big part of the Longhorns' offense in 2024 following Jonathon Brooks' departure to the NFL. Baxter received 138 carries as a freshman last season, totaling 659 yards and five touchdowns. He also added 156 receiving yards, giving him 815 yards from scrimmage.

With Baxter out, Jaydon Blue is expected to fill a bigger role in the backfield. Blue ran for 398 yards and three touchdowns on 65 carries last year. Behind Blue is Quintrevion Wisner, who logged 12 rushing attempts for 73 yards and a score in 2023.
