North Carolina quarterback Max Johnson left Thursday's 19-17 win over Minnesota on a cart after sustaining an injury in the third quarter.

While Johnson appeared to hurt his knee, head coach Mack Brown told Inside Carolina's Adam Smith after the game that it was actually a hip ailment that derailed the senior's season debut.

Conner Harrell entered the game at QB for the Tar Heels but only attempted four passes the rest of the way.

Johnson, who joined UNC this past offseason, completed 12 of 19 pass attempts for 71 yards and no touchdowns against one interception before exiting the contest. He began his college career at LSU (2020-21) and also played at Texas A&M (2022-23) before transferring to North Carolina.

Harrell is in his sophomore season with the Tar Heels. He served as Drake Maye's backup in 2023 and eventually started the school's bowl game, a loss to West Virginia.
