After more than three months of rumors, the New England Patriots have found their quarterback.
On Sunday, the Patriots reportedly signed 2015 NFL MVP Cam Newton, who was +500 to join the team just a few weeks ago. Oddsmakers quickly tightened New England's numbers across the board heading into the 2020 season:
Odds for the Patriots to... | Odds |
---|---|
Win the Super Bowl | +1600 |
Win the AFC | +500 |
Win the AFC East | +120 |
Make the playoffs | -220 |
Win 9 games | -150 |
The Patriots were as high as 20-1 earlier this summer to win the Super Bowl and 10-1 to win the AFC. However, Newton completely raises the ceiling for this squad, which was previously relying on either Jarrett Stidham or Brian Hoyer under center.
New England is now also tied atop the divisional oddsboard with the Buffalo Bills. By signing Newton, the Patriots' quarterback situation went from being arguably the worst in the AFC East to possibly the best if he's healthy.
And if Newton is indeed ready to go, his own props will be plenty rewarding for those who pounced before he signed. The former Carolina Panthers quarterback was +800 to win Comeback Player of the Year earlier this summer and is now the favorite at +300 - still a worthwhile bet. In May, he was +850 to be the Patriots' Week 1 starter. Congratulations if you jumped on those odds.
Bill Belichick is still 10-1 to win Coach of the Year - shortest in the field - but it's a much more palatable number given the credit he'll receive if Newton is able to lead New England to the playoffs.
