49ers GM Lynch: Bosa's holdout 'not something I'm comfortable with'
San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch isn't thrilled with star defensive end Nick Bosa's ongoing holdout.
"I don't like the situation," Lynch said on the "Murph & Mac Podcast" Thursday. "Since our tenure here, we haven't had a holdout anywhere toward this magnitude, so not something I'm comfortable with. We're working really hard to try to change that.
"He's a special player. He's going to get a special contract, I can tell you that."
The reigning Defensive Player of the Year hasn't attended the 49ers training camp amid ongoing contract extension negotiations with the club. He's set to make $17.8 million in the final year of his rookie contract in 2023. On his next deal, Bosa is expected to surpass T.J. Watt and older brother Joey Bosa, among the highest-paid pass-rushers in the league.
Bosa is subject to a $40,000 fine for each missed practice, but Lynch said the team will waive those financial penalties when he returns.
The 25-year-old quickly emerged as one of the league's premier pass-rushers since the Niners selected him with the No. 2 overall pick in 2019. He recorded 47 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, and nine sacks in his first season and was named the Defensive Rookie of the Year. After a torn ACL wiped out all but two games in 2020, the Ohio State product bounced back to lead the league with 21 TFLs to go along with 15.5 sacks in 2021.
Bosa posted a league-high 18.5 sacks as well as 51 tackles, 19 TFLs, and two forced fumbles in 2022 to earn the DPOY award and his third Pro Bowl nod.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan doesn't appear concerned about his defensive star missing the preseason.
"I don't know if Bosa has ever done a training camp, and he has done pretty good," Shanahan said, according to ESPN's Nick Wagoner.
San Francisco closes out its preseason Friday against the Los Angeles Chargers. The Niners kick off the regular season on Sept. 10 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
