Wisconsin's Greg Gard asked about future by ill-informed reporter
Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard was thrown into a tough situation when Badgers legend Bo Ryan announced his retirement in December.
Since then, Gard has helped turn around a stale season, leading Wisconsin into the Sweet Sixteen with a real chance to move past No. 6 Notre Dame on Friday. Prior to the tournament, the school rewarded Gard with a five-year contract as the full-time head coach.
That information was lost on a reporter Thursday, who apparently had no idea Gard had been given a new contract weeks ago.
Reporter: Do you want to be back next year? Do you think you deserve to keep coaching this team after this year?
Gard: Did you know I signed a contract already?
Reporter: No.
Gard: Yeah, they actually gave me a five-year contract about three weeks ago. I always had a one-year contract. I thought, wow, I saw five years on that thing, where do I sign? Interim tag - the best loss we had all year was the loss of the interim tag. That's our best loss in the last three weeks.
This exchange could've gone a lot worse for the reporter.
