Giants add defensive line depth in Dalvin Tomlinson

Daniel Shirey / Reuters

The New York Giants have selected defensive lineman Dalvin Tomlinson out of Alabama in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Tomlinson is one of the most consistent performers at his position in this year's draft class and should slot in as a nice depth piece for the Giants. He's one of the most academically impressive players in the draft too, having turned down an Ivy League educational opportunity to play for Alabama.

The Giants' rush defense was among the best in the league last season, ranking second in the league in yards per attempt, and will only get better with the addition of Tomlinson.

Dalvin Tomlinson Bio

Position: DL
School: Alabama
College Experience: RS Senior
Height: 6-3
Weight: 310 lbs

Strengths

  • Ideal fit as a nose tackle on any defensive line.
  • Uses combination of strength and technique to dominate the interior run game.
  • Ability to clog the middle and take on double teams can open things up for the rest of a front seven.

Weaknesses

  • Expectations of any pass-rush contributions, aside from pushing the pocket, will involve a bit of projection.
  • Projected role could give him less value in an increasingly pass-oriented league.
  • Has dealt with major injuries to both knees.
