Report: Fields to join Jets on 2-year, $40M contract
The New York Jets are signing free-agent quarterback Justin Fields to a two-year, $40-million deal, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The contract contains $30 million in guaranteed money, Schefter adds.
The Jets were rumored to be high on Fields prior to the start of Monday's legal tampering period. The Steelers were also interested in re-signing him.
The 26-year-old began the 2024 season as Pittsburgh's starting quarterback after Russell Wilson went down with a calf injury in training camp. Fields went 4-2 with five touchdown passes, five rushing scores, and one interception before the team turned back to Wilson.
Fields, who was traded to the Steelers last offseason, spent the first three years of his career with the Chicago Bears. Drafted 11th overall in 2021, he compiled a 10-28 record in Chicago with 40 touchdowns to 30 interceptions, though he struggled with consistency.
The signal-caller has immense dual-threat ability; he rushed for 1,143 yards in 2022 with the Bears.
New York cut veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers after a disappointing two-year stint. His 2023 season ended with a torn Achilles while his 2024 campaign ended with a 4-13 record.
The Jets are looking for their first playoff berth since 2010.
