San Jose Sharks rookie Macklin Celebrini is considered week-to-week with a lower-body ailment, head coach Ryan Warsofsky announced Saturday, according to The Hockey News' Max Miller.
Celebrini is dealing with a hip issue and played through it opening night, sources told San Jose Hockey Now's Sheng Peng.
Celebrini was placed on injured reserve and will be out for at least seven days from his last game. That makes him eligible to return on Oct. 18 against the Winnipeg Jets at the earliest, but Warsofsky didn't give an exact timeline.
"It's a good learning moment for him, and life's unfair at times," the bench boss said, per the Mercury News' Curtis Pashelka. "But I think he mentally, he's good. He was in here today working, and it's the game of hockey, right? There's going to be injuries. I'm sure it won't be his last injury, and we've got to continue to move forward."
Celebrini netted his first goal and picked up an assist versus the St. Louis Blues in 17:35 minutes of ice time on Thursday, but the Sharks blew a 4-1 lead in the third period and lost in overtime.
It's unclear when the 2024 first overall pick got hurt, but he missed San Jose's final two preseason games after crashing into the boards during an exhibition clash against Utah. Warsofsky wouldn't say if Celebrini's current injury is related to that issue.
The Sharks recalled defenseman Jack Thompson with Celebrini's roster spot opened up. Mikael Granlund is projected to center the top line between William Eklund and Tyler Toffoli against the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday.
