Canada's Arop wins silver in 800m, misses gold by 0.01 seconds

Canada's Marco Arop just missed out on gold in the men's 800m, settling for silver by one-hundredth of a second.

Arop fell to the back in the opening lap before pushing his way to the top 500m into the race. He battled with Kenya's Emmanuel Wanyonyi in the last 100m to take the lead but fell short at the line. Algeria's Djamel Sedjati rounded out the podium with bronze.

Arop's time of 1:41.20 set a new Canadian national record, besting the previous mark by more than a second-and-a-half, which he ran in 2023. It's the fourth-fastest time in history and an Americas record.

The last person to win a medal for Canada in the men's 800m was Bill Crothers at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. He also won silver.

Arop is the reigning world champion in the 800m. This is his second Olympics after he finished seventh in his semifinal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
