Cristiano Ronaldo broke down in tears after his penalty kick in the 105th minute of Monday's last-16 match against Slovenia was denied by old foe Jan Oblak.

With the Euro 2024 encounter goalless in extra time, the Portugal captain had an opportunity to break the deadlock after Diogo Jota was fouled in the area. The 39-year-old, looking to become the oldest scorer in European Championship history, went low to Oblak's left, but the Atletico Madrid shot-stopper sprung across and turned the effort aside.

A stunned Ronaldo began openly weeping in the team huddle after the whistle went for halftime of extra time just seconds later. Several teammates, including Diogo Dalot, consoled him.

Ronaldo made amends by stepping up and scoring Portugal's first penalty in the shootout, gesturing and apologizing to the Portuguese fans behind the goal after he picked out the bottom corner beyond a diving Oblak.

That pinpoint strike - and Diogo Costa's three saves in the shootout - helped Portugal stave off the upset and reach the Euro 2024 quarterfinals against France.

"Sadness at the start is joy at the end. That's what football is. Moments, inexplicable moments," Ronaldo said after the dramatic match, according to ESPN. "A direct shot to give the team the lead. I didn't manage it. Oblak made a good save ... I have to see the penalty, I don't know if I shot well or badly, but I haven't missed once all year, and when I needed it most, Oblak saved it."

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez praised Ronaldo for bouncing back after his first penalty to get his team off to a positive start in the shootout.

"Those emotions (after missing the penalty) are incredible. He doesn't need to care that much after the career he has had and everything he has achieved," Martinez said. "After missing the penalty, he was the first penalty taker. I was certain he had to be first and show us the way to victory. The way he reacted is an example, and we're very proud."
