Report: Athletics agree to 1-year deal with Urshela

The Athletics have agreed to a one-year contract with veteran infielder Gio Urshela, Martín Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Financial terms aren't yet known, and completion of the agreement is pending a physical.

Urshela becomes an immediate candidate to start at third base for the A's next season. Second-year player Darell Hernaiz was projected to man the hot corner in West Sacramento, while utility player Max Schuemann could also see time there.

Urshela also gives the A's some additional infield depth around the diamond. While third base is his primary position, he also has experience playing shortstop and first base.

The 33-year-old split last season between the Detroit Tigers and Atlanta Braves, hitting .250/.286/.361 with nine home runs and 52 RBIs across 128 total games. After struggling in Detroit leading up to his mid-August release, Urshela found a groove in Atlanta down the stretch, putting up a .711 OPS with four homers in 136 plate appearances to help the Braves reach the playoffs.

Urshela is best known for his defensive work at third base. In 2023, he accrued a career-high six defensive runs saved at the hot corner.

The native of Cartagena, Colombia, is a lifetime .273/.316/.413 hitter with 73 homers and 332 RBIs across parts of nine big-league seasons with seven teams.
