Mets push Phillies to brink of elimination with Game 3 win

The New York Mets are one win away from advancing to the NLCS after defeating the Philadelphia Phillies 7-2 in Game 3 of the NLDS.

Mets left-hander Sean Manaea was excellent, holding the Phillies to one run across seven-plus innings with six strikeouts to secure the win.

The Mets are one win away from reaching the NLCS for the first time since 2015.

"We have a great opportunity in our hands tomorrow, but at the end of the day, we have to come out and give it everything we've got," Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor told Fox Sports' Tom Verducci postgame.

Manaea kept the Phillies off-balance throughout the game, scattering just three hits and throwing 65 of his 91 pitches for strikes.

Mets first baseman Pete Alonso opened the scoring in the second inning with his second home run in as many games after he took Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola the other way for a solo shot.

Starling Marte helped the Mets break the game open in the bottom of the sixth, ripping a two-out, two-run single to make it 4-0. Jose Iglesias added two more runs with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.

The Mets will turn to veteran left-hander Jose Quintana for Game 4 on Wednesday. The Phillies counter with All-Star left-hander Ranger Suárez.

"Basically it's just very simple: You come in here tomorrow, and I told them it's the most resilient club I've ever been around," Phillies manager Rob Thomson said, per ASAP Transcripts. "That's what they're all about. They're all about toughness and fighting and playing together. That's what we need to do and just focus on one game."
